C43 Reservoir – S470 Pump Station

This station includes some of the world’s largest pumps, with a combined capacity of 1,500 cubic feet per second.

Massive reservoir pumping station at the South Florida Water Management District

Value Delivered

We constructed a state-of-the-art reservoir pumping station with a nominal capacity of 1,500 cubic feet per second for the South Florida Water Management District.

Pump station S470 uses some of the world’s largest pumps to move water into the Caloosahatchee Reservoir—an 11,000-acre storage reservoir supporting water quality in the Caloosahatchee Estuary. The project will help reduce harmful discharge of water from Lake Okeechobee in the wet season and provide beneficial freshwater during the dry season.

Client Objectives

This district undertook this project as a part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP), a collaborative federal and state initiative which seeks to restore the Florida environment and make water resources more resilient.

Solutions

The primary feature of the project was the construction of the pumping station itself and its four vertical line shaft electric-driven pumps, each with a nominal capacity of 375 cubic feet per second. Other features included a microwave tower and control building, structure removal at the confluence of the canal and reservoir, and bridge armoring.

Before beginning construction, our team had to remove pre-load materials and distribute them to designated locations near the pumping station.

During construction, our team provided:

  • Project management
  • Value engineering
  • Temporary steel pile cofferdam
  • Permanent steel pile and wingwall system
  • Dewatering
  • More than 13,600 cubic yards of reinforced cast-in-place concrete
  • More than 1,685 tons of reinforcing steel
  • A 130-foot-tall microwave tower
  • Canal work/revetment
  • Bridge armoring
  • Earthwork
  • Control building
  • Mechanical/HVAC work
  • Electrical work
  • Instrumentation and controls

Client Background

The South Florida Water Management District is a regional governmental district that oversees water resources from Orlando to the Florida Keys. We have a long-standing relationship with the district and have completed more than 100 projects for them.
